D/FW
Continues Ozone Problems
The Insider, the newsletter of the North Central Texas COG
environmental section, reports in its October issue that
ozone generation continued to be a problem in the
Metroplex. Between May 1, 1999 (when the season
began) and September 24, the D/FW region had called 24
ozone action days and had experienced 10 days of
violations of Federal standards during this period.
A total of 27 monitor exceedances occurred on these 10
days, including a reading of 164 ppb on August 4-5.
"An exceedance occurs at levels greater than 125
ppb," according to the Insider. "The levels
measured on August 4th and 5th are the highest
concentrations in the D/FW are in nearly a
decade." These exceedances make it a virtual
certainty that the EPA will further downgrade the D/FW
nonattainment level from Serious to Severe this
Spring. D/FW's continued problem with ozone
generation affects our region in many potential ways, not
least of which is over-night ozone drift into Texoma-land
which deteriorates the quality of our own otherwise clean
air. See our Air
page for more information on the D/FW State Implementation
Plan. |
